41,283 runners from 122 countries entered the 45th edition of the race, which belongs to the Abbott World Marathon Majors and is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race.
The BMW Berlin Marathon follows a looped course that takes in 10 Berlin neighbourhoods and starts (and finishes) on Straße des 17. Juni near the Brandenburg Gate. What follows is 26.2 miles of fascinating landmarks, including the Siegessäule column, Berlin Cathedral, the State Opera House, and Potsdamer Platz . The course itself is famously flat and quick, with plenty of world records having been set there throughout the years. Along the route you’ll see frequent refreshment and aid stations, which serve water, sports drinks, energy gels and fruit to the runners.
